Rules and Requirements
1. Two scholarships of $750.00 each will be awarded to High School Seniors (1 male, 1 female). Additionally, one senior will be elected to be the recipient of the Glenn Taketa Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500. The Glenn Taketa Memorial Scholarship alternates each year between a Senior Girl and Senior Boy recipient. This year a 12th grade girl will be chosen.
2. The funds for the Zebra Scholarship are provided from the profits of our annual invitational basketball tournament and donations. The Taketa family provides for the Glenn Taketa Memorial Scholarship through a donation in his memory.
3. The applicant must be of a Class of 2011 high school graduate and long-standing member of our organization.
4. A scholarship committee of volunteers (one representing each team) shall evaluate the scholarship applications. All award decisions made by the scholarship committee are final.
5. Each scholarship applicant will be evaluated in the following areas:
- Academic Achievements: An official transcript required. Consideration is given to Academic GPA (Weighted), 9-12 SAT scores and/or ACT scores, and Honors and AP classes.
- Honors/Awards & Personal Achievements: Awards and honors that each applicant has received shall be evaluated. Copies of all awards and honors or letters of verification by teacher or school counselors shall accompany the application.
- Leadership Positions Held: Examples include – President of the JR. YBA, Senior Patrol leader Boy Scouts of America, Junior Class President, Captain of the JV Football team, Treasurer of the Spanish Club.
- Extracurricular Activities: The applicant’s membership/participation in school service clubs, organizations, sports, performing arts, etc.
- Community Involvement: Applicant’s involvement in volunteer/public service benefiting others such as church, participation in public service organizations, individual volunteer efforts, etc.
- Employment: Applicant’s involvement in paid positions.
- Essay: Each applicant shall write a brief essay entitled, “What being a San Jose Zebra means to me?” The essay shall be up to two pages in length, double-spaced and in 12-point font. Consideration will be given to content and grammar (technical).
6. The above requirements must be included at the time the application is submitted. Information submitted is considered the property of the San Jose Zebra Youth Foundation and will not be returned.
7. Application Deadline: Applications with all required documents must be received/postmarked no later than May 1, 2012. Electronic documentation is preferred. Please submit the application and documents to:
